Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Flexco® Bolt Hinged fastener have a curved templet?

The curved cut and curved templet are used to even out the tension across the width of the splice. You must cut the belt on a curve using a curved templet. In a conveyor belt, the tension that is applied does not spread evenly across the width of the belt. The sides of the belt see the greatest tension, while the center of the belt sees the least. The use of a curved templet ensures that the bolt holes are the same distance from the belt edge across the entire width of belt.

Cutting the belt on a slight curve, with the curve pointing into the belt, reduces the length of the belt in the center. This increases the tension in the center of the belt when the two belt ends are put together with the splice. Evening out the tension will spread the wear across the entire width of the splice.  This was much more of a concern back in the 40s when the Bolt Solid Plate Fastener was created due to the design of the belts available.
